First State Picnic

Will your dog eat THAT???  Find out at the First State Picnic, July 14th, 12-5, Oley Fairgrounds!

If your FHF last time said July 17th, I apologize!  It IS July 14th, Saturday!

Is Your Dog A Pin-up?

Are your hounds the cutest ones on the block?  Do they have careers as models in store for them?

Find out!  First State is going to publish its first ever calendar this year, and we're looking for Miss January, Mr. February...a whole year of happy First State Hounds!

We'll be taking picture submissions now through June 15th.  And then voting will start for the hounds to grace the calendar!  There will be one main picture chosen for each month, and a number of smaller ones as well.   Voting will end at the picnic, July 14th.

If you'd like to submit a photo for the calendar, please email it to anotterchaos@yahoo.com, or mail it to Janet Selman at 414 Lawrence Avenue, West Lawn, PA 19609.  Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope if you'd like it returned, or plan to pick it up at the picnic.

Is Babe our Miss March?

Greyhound-Data 101, part two

In March, we talked about how to update your hound's information on www.greyhound-data.com.  Today, we'll talk about how to upload a picture!

First, go to www.greyhound-data.comOn the second line down from the top, click on "Log-In".  If you haven't already, you'll need to create an account...this helps protect the site from mischief.  Just click on "create new account", and fill in your name, email, and create a password.  Once you're logged in, search for your dog.  You can do this by racing name, if you know it, in the white box at the top right.  Or you can search by tattoos (click on Tattoo in the top bar).  Hint: If you're having trouble searching by entering both tattoos, try again by using only the left ear tattoo, or the right ear tattoo combined with the color and gender. If you're having problems finding your dog, email me at anotterchaos@yahoo.com, and hopefully we can find it.

Once you're on your dog's page, above the dog's name, it will say, "add picture."  Click on this.  On the next page, click on "browse" and find the picture on your computer. Click "upload" and your picture should upload!  You can upload up to three pictures per dog...then they will run as a slideshow, like this (wait a few seconds for the picture to changes)... http://www.greyhound-data.com/d?i=665835

Any problems? Email me, and we'll try to figure it out!

Jeter's Story

In early October, I received a phone message from the Dog Warden for the Lehigh Valley area, who wanted to know if FSGR had any loose greys in the Fogelsville area that I would know about.  I did not hear anything about a loose grey, but took the woman's number that had called the dog warden about the sighting and contacted her myself.   I spoke to her and from her description of the dog, it sure sounded like a greyhound.  I talked to Jim Holbrook about it and since he works nights and has time during the daytime to check this out, I turned it over to him.  He called the woman and went there that same afternoon...and saw the dog....but only from a distance, but it did look very much like a greyhound.  He went back every afternoon that week, with treats in hand and every day drew the dog a little closer to him.  BUT every time he got close enough to try to grab the dog, any movement would send him retreating a distan ce away from him.  So I called on FSGR for their Have A Heart trap and got it from Denise Siegfried in Hellertown via Christine Hance/Guth.  They were the only ones with a vehicle big enough to transport the trap.  Chris brought the trap up to us here in Fogelsville area and we set it up and baited it on a Tuesday night in week #2 of our attempt to capture Jeter.  Every day, Jim would go check on the trap and talk to the woman at the home where we had the trap set up.  She would see the dog every day, she actually could see the trap from her kitchen window.  Every night when we would return to check the trap, the food dish was OUTSIDE the trap, empty.  So the woman watched the trap more carefully, and finally saw that the dog seemed to KNOW where the trip-plate for the trap door was and he would step OVER it to get to the food!!!  Finally on the following Monday night, approximately 8 pm, I got a phone call from her telling me that the dog wa s IN the trap. So I called both Christine and Jim and we headed over to their house to pick up the trap and the dog.  He was barking when we got there, but the minute we approached the trap he stopped barking and even though he was afraid...he seemed happy to see us.  We loaded the trap...dog and all into Christine's truck and brought him back here to my home. Once we had the trap safely inside my containment unit, we opened it up and out the dog came....Jim Holbrook's wife, actually named him Jeter...for Jeter Brennan the baseball player.  And the son of the woman that helped us catch him was named Brendan, so thus his name Jeter Brendan!!!

As it turned out, Jeter was a mix, not a pure greyhound, but a lover non the less.  We took him to Alburtis for a physical and then later for neutering, and Dr. Donavan thought perhaps he was mixed with a Rhodesian Ridgeback, but whatever he was, he definitely was part greyhound.  He is a lover and a happy boy.  He found his new FOREVER home by around Thanksgiving time at a home down towards Delaware.  But Jeter will remain a VERY special boy in our hearts here in the Lehigh Valley, as Jim, Christine and myself ALL had a hand in saving his life....HAPPY FOREVER HOME, Jeter!!!
