Thanks to our wonderful volunteers

***Hot Dewey News! ***
Some of us are lucky enough to be going to Dewey Beach this weekend for Greyhounds Reach the Beach! But for those of us who can't go, we can still get a glimpse!
THE EARLY SHOW will be broadcasting both pre-recorded and live pieces about Dewey starting at 7:39 a.m., Saturday morning! Tune in...you'll see lots of hounds, and just maybe someone you know!
GIVELINE
I was dismayed recently to find out that
most well known on-line booksellers sell materials
regarding dog- and cock-fighting! But I've found an alternative that chooses NOT to make money
off of animal suffering, AND donates a percentage
of the sales to charities! The prices are comparable
to other well known sites, and you can help
First State at the same time.

Friends Helping Friends
Boscov's presents "Friends Helping Friends",
which is a wonderful event that benefits local
non-profit agencies and organizations. Buy a
shopping pass for a $5.00 donation & enjoy
a full day of fun shopping at your local Boscov's.
The event is Tuesday, October 16th from
9 AM - 9 PM. The shopping pass entitles you
to 25% off mostly everything (few exceptions),
refreshments, entertainment, & a chance to
win door prizes.
For more info, please contact Deb DeLucca at doggs@rcn.com or call at 610-559-9744.
Shades of Summer

A fabulous time was had by all at the First State picnic! Thanks to Joanne, Susan, Sean, Cindy, Yvette, and the Ryans for sharing their pictures! For more pictures, click here.

Thanks to our wonderful volunteers
We've had a number of special volunteers step up lately and help us in some tight situations, as well as just continue to do the wonderful things they do to keep us running!
Thanks to Donald Verderosa who took his dogs, Togo & Diva, to an event at a Delaware school with author Craig Pierce! Lots of kids got to meet their first greys. Togo & Diva patiently were adored by 3 assemblies full of kids!
And thanks to all the folks who helped bring in the latest batches of pups, and who are offering them foster homes!
On 8/5/07, Chris and Christine Guth transported 4 pups from WV to their home for the clean-up: Cleanup was performed by Chris & Christine Guth, Deb Detterline, Susan Martin, Yvette & Alan Grometstein.
The 4 dogs are/were fostered by the following:
Larry & Mary Hirsch = Onnie
Ellen Link = Vortex, who since has been adopted by Ellen and his name was changed to Fletcher
Dan Kern = Bob (since has been adopted)
Deb Detterline = Chip (since has been adopted)
On 8/25/07:
Chris and Christine Guth transported 6 dogs from WV to Sue Mason's house for clean-up. Clean-up was performed by Chris and Christine Guth, Sue Mason, Susan Martin, Janet, Katie, John & Brian Selman, Yvette & Allen Grometstein, Ellen Link along with her sons, Daniel & Carl Link, & Ellen Nicotra along with her daughters Sara, Katie & Mandy Nicotra.
The 6 dogs went into these foster homes:

Deb Detterline = Ruby (soon to be adopted!)
Ellen Link = Drew, who has since been adopted
Chris & Christine Guth = Mary
Eileen Nicotra = Talula Eileen is a new foster, and our special thanks to her & her kids for helping as well as fostering!
Toni Cron is fostering Mikki, and Dan Kern is fostering Wyatt.
AND, on Labor Day, Robin Cuzner went to WV to pick up Broken Leg Bandito, and brought him into the Cuzner household to recover from extensive surgery. More on this story later!
Anyone who is interested or knows someone who would like more information on fostering or participating in getting new pups settled as they come in to our program, please contact Christine Guth gbink26@enter.net 484-201-5756

Ancient Predators, New Responsibilities
We all know that our greyhound friends come from ancient lineage, beautifully engineered to perform their ancient function: using their keen sight & speed to hunt prey. And many of us have had the unsettling experience of seeing our gentle couch potatoes enthusiastically pounce upon unwary critters in our own backyards! As the caretakers of these well designed predators, we have a responsibility to their unwilling prey, who deserve our respect and compassion just as our companions do.
Sue Mason, our adoption coordinator as well as experienced wildlife rehabilitator, shares these facts about injured wildlife:
Domestic bunnies are sometimes set free in the wild, but they are no more ready to take care of themselves in the wild than any other domestic creature would be. They need to be rescued and given another domestic home.
Wild mothers will always return to their babies, whether you've touched them, or the nest, or not. That they will not is a common misconception. This goes for birds as well as mammals.
Wild baby rabbits have a small white dot on their forehead that disappears at age 4-5 weeks, after which they can survive on their own. If their mother is killed before the white dot disappears, they will need to be rescued and hand fed until they are old enough to release.
If you find an orphaned or injured animal, please contact Sue, who can give you advice and direct you to the appropriate agencies to care for them, at animaluvr2@verizon.net, or 856.430.0743.
Foster coordinator Christine Hance shares this recipe which has her hounds going nuts!
Chicken Soup Cookies
1 cup ground high-quality dog food kibble, I used their regular dry dog food.
2 cups Bisquick baking mix
1 18.8-ounce can Campbell's Chunky Chicken Soup
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Put dog food in blender and grind to coarse flour. In a large bowl, mix together the ground kibble and the remaining ingredients until well combined. Drop by teaspoon onto greased cookie sheets. Bake for 15 mines or until golden brown. Remove from oven, let cool and store in airtight container in the refrigerator. Makes 50 to 60 bite size treats.
